Norwich Lawn Bowlers At It Again!

Reporting, Linda Hawken, VP, Norwich Lawn Bowing Club

Yet another fairly new format of play was enjoyed by sixteen teams on the Norwich Lawn Bowling Club’s green on July 26th, sponsored by the First Ontario Credit Union. The day’s Drawmaster Tony Hawken introduced the game of “Four Games, Three Bowls” a year ago and it was so popular the club decided to run it again this year.

A normal tournament comprises three games in which each player delivers four bowls. With four games and only three bowls each, players deliver the same number of bowls only over a greater number of games and ensuring that there is only one four-game winner. This makes for more work for the Drawmaster but there were no complaints and the day was enjoyed by all.

Brenda and Graham Darmon were on kitchen duty for this tournament and provided much-appreciated snacks and coffee before play began with goodies and punch at lunchtime.

Teams attended from Aylmer, Burlington, Caledonia, Embro, Heritage Greens (Kitchener), St George, Woodstock, Thamesford and, of course, Norwich.

When four games had been played, the team of Roberta Wilson and Heather Johnson from Aylmer had won them all with total points of 62. In second place was the husband-and-wife team of Norm and Mary Smith from Kitchener with three wins and 54 points. With the same number of points (47), two teams were very close for third place but Nev Williams and Donna McLellan (Norwich) managed to keep the points scored against them to 41 while Joe and Jenny Vries of Embro had 42 points scored against them and came in fourth place. Richard Learn and wife Marlene (Norwich) came fifth with two wins and 55 points. Also with two wins was Tilly Mannen and her partner from St George who had a score of 48+1 points. Finally, with one win and the high number of aggregate points (49+6) were Gary Moore (Woodstock) and Deanna Palmer (Thamesford).

The lawn bowling season has just about reached its mid-point but it’s not too late to come out and try it. Social lawn bowling sessions take place at the Norwich club, on Stover Street with parking off Carmen Street, every Tuesday and Thursday evening at 7 pm (plan to arrive at 6.45). Please wear flat-soles shoes (eg sneakers) to protect the grass. As you can see from the photo below, “whites” are not compulsory. Beginners will receive free instruction and use of the club’s bowls while learning.

Lawn bowling – it’s like curling, on grass!
