CANADIAN SHORT MAT BOWLS ASSOCIATION Attention: All Canadian Provincial Lawn Bowling Associations.

We would like to inform you of the formation of the Canadian Short Mat Bowls Association (CSMBA) as of August 9th, 2016. For those who are not yet familiar with the game of Short Mat, it is Lawn Bowling indoors on a 6 foot by 45 foot foam or rubber backed mat, along with 2 fenders, block, jack, and two foot mats. Short mat bowls is an all-year sport unaffected by weather conditions and it does not require a permanent location as the rink mats can be rolled up and stowed away. This makes it particularly appropriate for small communities as it can be played in village halls, schools, sports and social clubs, hotels, churches etc. where space is restricted.

Canada, in particular, has two seasons: Outdoor lawn bowling from May to Thanksgiving, and Indoor short mat, carpet bowling or other types of carpeted facility from October to April. Why was the CSMBA founded? In March of 2016 Canada was invited as a “guest” nation to the 2016 Short Mat World Championships in Leigh, England. We were able, on short notice, to send a 9 player team. We played against teams from Wales, Isle of Man, Ireland, Scotland, England, Sweden, Germany, Belgium, Norway, Denmark, Italy, Netherlands and India.

We were “blown away” with the skill levels, youth involvement and excitement. During these championships we were asked to officially form a Canadian Association in order to qualify to send a full team to Sweden in 2018. At the same time, we played under the International Short Mat Rules and Regulations, and we felt we would like to make these rules available on our web site to any club who wishes them. Next, we wanted to act as a conduit for Canadian Short Mat Clubs to exchange ideas and to foster growth of Short Mat Bowls in Canada. We also feel that Lawn Bowling will benefit greatly as a strong short mat membership will become a source of new lawn bowlers in the spring and summer. At the same time, many lawn bowlers may wish to try short mat once the weather turns too cold to play outside. We think it is a total win, win! We sincerely hope that all Lawn Bowlers feel the same way about the opportunity to grow both sports within their Province and within Canada.

Please consider passing this information on to all your members, and member clubs. The CSMBA is a member of and under the auspices of the World Short Mat Bowls Association and as such is the controlling body in Canada for both national and international short mat competitions. In November of 2017 we will be hosting the 2017 Canadian Short Mat Championships and Trials in Toronto, Ontario. From these Championships we will select Canada’s 20 Player Team travelling to Sweden in March of 2018 to participate in the Short Mat World Championships.
We anticipate opening a website sometime in September and are taking memberships now. We feel that some provinces may eventually want to organize their own clubs into Short Mat Provincial Associations, and we have made this possibility a part of our Constitution. However, at this time, we are accepting members on a club by club basis. Memberships for each club in the inaugural year are set at $50.00 with an option of receiving a subscription to Short Mat International Magazine for $40.00 extra. Annual Membership runs from October 1st – September 30th each year.

All requests for more information or a membership application may be sent to: CSMBA Secretary, Sophie McKeown or
